General questions:I am a veteran, however I don't have any type of ID card, can I still use these discounts?
Absolutely! That is one of the main reasons we created this platform. We are veterans too, and we wanted a way for merchants to offer veterans discounts without requiring a veteran ID card, VA card, or retired military card. The majority of veterans don't fit into those categories, so why should they be excluded from veteran discounts? Many of the discounts listed have an alternate way to verify that you are a veteran. Most of them use third-party verification services (such as ID.me or SheerID), and some use other methods (such as supplying your DD214).
How do you find the veteran discounts listed?
Discounts listed on this site can be submitted by the merchants offering them, or by our staff. After a merchant submits a discount, and it is verified and passes our criteria, we will assign it a category, list the percentage saved, the link, and a brief summary. We verify each discount by attempting to redeem it ourselves. If we can redeem it, any veteran can. We value feedback, so if you have issues, please contact us so that we can reach out to the merchant and attempt to resolve them.
How are the veteran discount percentages calculated?
The discount percentages posted are the discounts provided to veterans by the merchant as compared to their retail pricing, and the amount given during the time of the submission. Sometimes discounts fluctuate, so they may be higher or lower when you visit the merchant. If a merchant offers various discounts (for example: they offer different percentages per product line), we will list the highest (non-clearance) item discount we can find during the submission. Again, the discount percentages should be considered a guide and not binding for the merchant. We recommend that the merchant provides a flat discount percentage across all product lines and services for our veterans. However, some merchants do not do that.
What is ID.me, SheerID, or ID.Discount (VerifyPass)?
ID.me (they use the service called TroopID), SheerID, and ID.Discount (VerifyPass) are third-party verification service providers. Several merchants use them to verify your veteran status before purchasing the product or service. It is common to use them when redeeming a veteran discount from the larger merchants since they help protect their deals from fraud. These services are well established and considered an industry-standard fraud prevention service provider.
Redeeming veteran discounts:What happens when I click on the "Get discount" button?
When you click on the "Get discount" button you will be taken to the online store or sponsor that is offering the discount. Just like any online store, they will ask for you to create a secure login before you can redeem their discounts.
Why is the merchant asking me to verify my veteran status?
It is up to the merchant to control who redeems their coupons, so they will often ask you to verify your veteran status to avoid fraudulent use. Merchants handle this very differently, some use the honor system, while others use third-party verification services.
What methods do merchants use to verify eligibility?
There are many methods of verification, however, most merchants are now using third-party verification services. Examples of these include ID.me, SheerID, and DMDC. When they use a third-party service, the verification usually only takes seconds, and it is FREE (the merchant pays the verification service for the process).
What is third-party veteran status verification?
Third-party veteran verification services are often used by merchants to help prevent fraud - especially on significant discounts.
How does the veteran verification process work?
If the merchant is using this service, you will be prompted to provide minimal information, that will then be matched against high-assurance, authoritative data to decide your eligibility.
Do I have to go through a verification process for every discount?
That depends on which stores or sponsors you are using. If you are using one store (such as ShopMyExchange.com for most of your discounts), you only have to go through the verification one time since you will do it as part of your secure login process. If you want to shop several other stores that are using different methods of verification, you may have to submit to the process again.
Why can't I just get my status verified with VeteranDiscounts.org?
Our site's purpose is to locate, verify, and list veteran discounts from multiple stores and sponsors. We don't actually sell or provide the products & services listed. Our content is for informational purposes only and is meant to support the veteran community by providing these links in one convenient location at no charge.
Submitting veteran discounts:
What are the requirements for a veteran discount to be included on this site?
We use the following criteria when qualifying a veteran discount. If it meets these requirements, submit it, and we will post it to the list so the veteran community can take advantage of it.
- Every discount on our site must be available for redemption by all veterans. Under federal law, a veteran is any person who served honorably on active duty in the armed forces of the United States. Discharges marked “general and under honorable conditions” also qualify. We understand that third-party verification is a preferred way to protect offers given to military veterans without government-issued ID cards, and if the merchant does not have this capability, we can connect them with leading verification services.
- All veteran discounts on this site must have information available to our community through an official online store or sponsor. In some cases, merchants may want to have the veteran call in to verify their veteran status over the phone, and that is perfectly acceptable. However, we would need an online merchant page explaining the process. We require this so that when you click on our "Get discount" button, they are either taken to the merchant to collect their discount (after verification), or directed to an official page with instructions on how to redeem their discount by the merchant.
- Discounts listed on our site must be at a minimum of 5% off of regular pricing. We prefer 10-20% discounts (or more) since they are the most sought after by our veteran community. The discount should be significant enough to warrant third-party verification requests if required by the merchant. If the discount is not perceived to be a significant value, our veterans will tend to ignore the offer.
- Last, but not least, the discounts we list on our site must be discounts from reputable merchants and represent quality products and services. We take all complaints seriously, and if we feel that the service or product being offered to our veteran community is sub-par in any way, we will not list it nor hesitate to remove the offer.
How do I submit a veteran discount that is not currently listed on the site?
Submitting a new discount FREE and simple, simply contact us and provide as much information as possible (such as the link to the discount, percentage, and any dedicated information concerning the discount). We will then attempt to use the discount, and if it meets our criteria, list it for free on our site. We reserve the right to reject any veteran discount submission if we feel that the offer is fraudulent in nature, or does not meet our standards. Our primary goal is to foster an extremely high-quality resource for the veteran community and the merchants that support them.
I am a merchant and I want to offer a veteran discount, how do I do that without having it abused by non-veterans?
Offering an online discount and protecting it from abuse has never been easier:
- Step 1:
- Read our requirements
First, review our list of requirements for a veteran discount. Veterans want significant, quality, and committed discounts. In return, they will promote you to their peers and become loyal to your brand. It is all about honoring the community they belong to. They understand the sacrifice a merchant makes when offering a discount and will reward you in kind with continued patronage.
- Step 2:
- Setup a dedicated web page detailing the discount
This is often missed by online merchants, however having a dedicated page that explains the discount, eligibility requirements, and process for redeeming it goes a long way. The industry standard is to create a "www.yoursite.com/military" page on your website. This allows the veterans to know this is a merchant authorized discount and will be honored. It also makes it easier for you to see the traffic coming in from seeking this discount, and adjust your online advertising accordingly.
- Step 3:
- Use a third-party veteran verification service
It is tempting to authenticate veterans with your existing staff, however, we strongly recommend you don't. Veterans are not active military, and few are retired military or recipients of VA disability benefits. That means they only have limited documentation to prove they are a veteran (such as a DD214, or in some cases a Driver's License with a veteran designation). Asking for a DD214 is extremely risky since it has very sensitive information on it (such as their SSN). As a merchant, you do not want to ask, view, or hold such sensitive information. There are three main services that specialize in verifying veteran status: ID.me, SheerID, and ID.services. These third-party verification services use online military databases to quickly certify a veteran and are the preferred method in the retail industry for protecting online discounts.
- Step 4:
- Submit the discount to us
After you have created the discount, and verified the acceptance process, contact us and provide your details concerning the veteran discount. We will review it, and if accepted, we will list it and notify the veteran community of its availability. As always, we thank you for your support of our community, and if you have any questions or concerns, we would love to talk to you.
What happens after I submit a veteran discount?
After a veteran discount is submitted, we will review the information and upload it into our platform. In some rare instances, we may not accept the discount. Once the discount is listed on our platform, it will remain on our site until you ask us to take it down, or the discount is found inactive. We run periodic sweeps of all discount to verify active status, and we also ask the community to alert us if they have found a bad link.
What is the cost of submitting a veteran discount?
Submitting a veteran discount is FREE.
Can I change or modify the discount once it is submitted?
Yes. As the merchant offering the discount, you can always change the details listed or have the discount removed. Simply contact us with your changes and we will update your listing for you.
About our project:Why should I use VeteranDiscounts.org, aren't there already other sites that list discounts?
We believe that you will find this platform your "go to" resource when looking for exceptional veteran discounts because:
- Our discounts are FREE to use, significant, and up to date,
- We don't rent, sell or share your personal information,
- We only list pre-qualified veteran discounts (you don't have to wade through active or retired military offers),
- Every discount must pass a strict set of requirements in order to be listed,
- We are 100% veteran owned and operated and are very dedicated to this project,
- We partner with leading merchants to offer exceptional discounts on items and services you would actually use.
This project was developed and is actively curated by military veterans. We know the struggles veterans go through trying to find and use discounts offered by merchants and sponsors. Veterans often have difficulty finding discounts compared to active or retired military. We decided to create a veteran community resource that seeks out veteran discounts and promote merchants willing to honor the veteran community..How does this site make money to continue?
To keep this site free for our veteran community, we allow ads to be run on our site, and accept sponsorship from merchants. We use the money generated from our sponsors and advertisements to cover administrative costs, continual web development, hosting, security, and marketing costs.
